We're Going Live. Folks

Work just became interesting. We have to update the live site for real on Monday next week. Which means the team needs to download the website contents, test the migration on a local server, fix any problems and upload everything back to the server.

This should be a fun week. We're keeping our fingers crossed.

Moving...

We moved residence this weekend. We're now living in a small apartment. But it's walking distance from my kids' school and to the shuttle service to Makati. And my wife can walk to the market. And a covered basketball court just across the street.

Several downsides: I don't have a computer at home at the moment; not enough electrical outlets; the toilet and bath can't accommodate two consenting adults for couple shower (DAMN!); no TV for the next month or so; and we have more cabinets than apartment space.

Oh well, life moves...

"Friday I'm In Love" by The Cure

"Friday I'm In Love"
THE CURE

i don't care if monday's blue
tuesday's grey and wednesday too
thursday i don't care about you
it's friday i'm in love

monday you can fall apart
tuesday wednesday break my heart
thursday doesn't even start
it's friday i'm in love

saturday wait
and sunday always comes too late
but friday never hesitate...

i don't care if monday's black
tuesday wednesday heart attack
thursday never looking back
it's friday i'm in love

monday you can hold your head
tuesday wednesday stay in bed
or thursday watch the walls instead
it's friday i'm in love

saturday wait
and sunday always comes too late
but friday never hesitate...

dressed up to the eyes
it's a wonderful surprise
to see your shoes and your spirits rise
throwing out your frown
and just smiling at the sound
and as sleek as a shriek
spinning round and round
always take a big bite
it's such a gorgeous sight
to see you in the middle of the night
you can never get enough
enough of this stuff
it's friday
i'm in love

"Standing at the Edge of the Earth" by Blessid Union of Souls

"Standing At The Edge Of The Earth"
BLESSID UNION OF SOULS

I knew that this moment would come in time
That I'd have to let go and watch you fly
I know you're coming back so why am I dying inside
Are you searching for words that you can't find
Trying to hide your emotions but eyes don't lie
Guess there's no easy way to say goodbye
So I'll be standing at the edge of the earth
Hoping that someday you'll come back again
I'll be standing at the edge of the earth hoping for someday
Don't misunderstand what I'm trying to say
I don't want to let you leave this way
I want you to know that I stand right by your side
And I know this may be
The very last time that we see each other cry
But whatever happens know that I'll....
I'll be standing at the edge of the earth
Hoping that one day you'll come back again
I'll be standing at the edge of the earth hoping that someday
You'll come back to me
I'll be praying for whatever it's worth
Believing that one day you'll come back to me
I'll be standing at the edge of the earth
Hoping for someday
And I know this may be
The very last time that we see each other cry
But whatever happens know that I'll....
I'll be standing at the edge of the earth
Hoping that one day you'll come back again
I'll be standing at the edge of the earth hoping that someday
You'll come back to me
I'll be praying for whatever it's worth
Believing that one day you'll come back to me
I'll be standing at the edge of the earth
Hoping for someday
Waiting for someday Believing in someday
Praying for someday, I'll be....
Longing for someday Clinging to someday
Cherishing someday, I'll be....
Thinking of someday Dreaming of someday
Wishing for someday, I'll be....
Living for someday Counting on someday
Knowing that one day....
I will see you

"Dreaming of You" by Selena

"Dreaming of You'
Selena

Late at night when all the world is sleeping
I'd stay up and think of you
And I'd wish on a star
That somewhere you are thinking of me too

Cuz I'm dreaming of you tonight
Till tomorrow, I'll be holding you tight
And there's nowhere in the world I'd rather be
Then here in my room,
Dreaming about you and me

Wonder if you even see me
And I wonder if you know I'm there
If you looked in my eyes
Would you see what's inside?
Would you even care?

I just wanna hold you close
But so far, all I have are dreams of you
So, I wait for the day and the courage to say
How much I love you(Yes, I do)

I'll be dreaming of you tonight
Till tomorrow, I'll be holding you tight
And there's nowhere in the world I'd rather be
Then here in my room,
Dreaming about you and me

Ahhh...I can't stop dreaming of you
Ahhh...I can't stop dreamin

Late at night when all the world is sleeping
I'd stay up and think of you
And I still can't believe that you came up to me
And said, "I love you; I love you too"

Now I'm dreaming with you tonight
Till tomorrow, and for all of my life
And there's nowhere in the world I'd rather be
Then here in my room,
Dreaming with you endlessly...

Yahoo! News - Apple Mythology and Desktop Security

Yahoo! News - Apple Mythology and Desktop Security

Apple Mythology and Desktop Security

Thu Apr 21, 2:03 PM ET
Paul Murphy, cio-today.com

Two weeks ago theregister.co.uk summarized an analysis (done by Quocirca) of reader response to questions on Linux desktop migration.

To no one's surprise, the study found that business people cite the opportunity to sidestep the insecurity of the Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT - news) PC, not cost savings, as the primary reason for considering desktop Linux. Most respondents agreed, furthermore, that the high cost of matching Windows applications, particularly Microsoft Office and custom applications, is the greatest barrier to change.

What's most interesting about this is what it reveals about the respondents: specifically that they're so focused on fighting Microsoft's alligators that they don't see the hardware side of their security problems and are blind to the BSD-based Mac OS X option for running Microsoft Office without Microsoft Windows.

Software and Hardware Vulnerabilities

At present, attacks on Microsoft's Windows products are generally drawn from a different population of possible attacks than those on Unix variants such as BSD, Linux and Solaris. From a practical perspective, the key difference is that attacks on Wintel tend to have two parts: A software vulnerability is exploited to give a remote attacker access to the x86 hardware and that access is then used to gain control of the machine.

In contrast, attacks on Unix generally require some form of initial legal access to the machine and focus on finding software ways to upgrade priveleges illegally.

Consider, for example, CAN-2004-1134 in the NIST vulnerabilities database:

Summary: Buffer overflow in the Microsoft W3Who ISAPI (w3who.dll) allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via a long query string.

Published Before: 1/10/2005

Severity: High

The vulnerability exists in Microsoft's code, but the exploit depends on the rigid stack-order execution and limited page protection inherent in the x86 architecture. If Windows ran on Risc, that vulnerability would still exist, but it would be a non-issue because the exploit opportunity would be more theoretical than practical.

Linux and open-source applications are thought to have far fewer software vulnerabilities than Microsoft's products, but Linux on Intel (Nasdaq: INTC - news) is susceptible to the same kind of attacks as those now predominantly affecting Wintel users. For real long-term security improvements, therefore, the right answer is to look at Linux, or any other Unix, on non x86 hardware.

One such option is provided by Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL - news) BSD-based products on the PowerPC-derived G4 and G5 CPUs. Linus Torvalds, for example, apparently now runs Linux on a Mac G5 and there are several Linux distributions for this hardware -- all of which are immune to the typical x86-oriented exploit.

Power of Attraction

In addition, Apple's Mac OS X has several compelling attractions of its own. First, it's the most advanced and user-friendly graphical user environment in commercial use. It offers thousands of commercial applications, including Microsoft Office. And it runs nearly all open-source applications.

Also, Macs are less expensive. That's not what you see in the PC press, but it's reality. The explanation for that, besides dishonesty on the part of PC reviewers going as far back as 1984, is primarily that Apple's product cycles resemble those of other consumer electronics manufacturers, not those of the PC industry.

Thus, Apple's products have generally been considerably less expensive and faster than PCs at the beginning of the Apple product cycle, and comparably slower and more expensive than PCs at the end. That probably ended, however, in the late 1990s when the combination of decreasing hardware prices with increasing Microsoft licensing cost reduced the pricing advantage enjoyed by PCs introduced at the end of an Apple product cycle.

Notice that in assessing relative price and performance, both aging and software confuse the issue. Macs run more functional software and have a much longer useful life. As a result, the Macs that PC users see most often -- in schools or at grandma's house -- tend to be significantly older and slower than the PCs people compare them to because Wintel product churn means that a three-year-old PC is a museum piece, while a six-year-old iMac running OS 9 is likely still to be in use.

Apples to Apples?

It's possible, however, to take both aging and software out of the comparison by looking at situations in which both groups use the same software on the latest hardware they can afford. Check out supercomputer performance data, for example, where everybody runs the same applications under Unix, and you'll see that a dual G5 Xserve at 2.3 GHz makes about twice the cluster contribution offered by dual Xeons at 3.2 GHz.

Although Apple is expected to announce further speed bumps (and video upgrades to the 128-MB Radeon 9600) several weeks after you read this, prices are currently well below comparably configured Dell (Nasdaq: DELL - news) gear, but the difference is narrowing as PC manufacturers close out the 3.X-GHz era and pre-announce their second new generation since Apple's first G5 desktop was introduced in June of 2003.

For example, using pricing and configuration data from the Dell and Apple Web sites on April 10, 2005, Dell's 810 laptop is now about $300 more than Apple's midrange; Dell's Optiplex GX280 is about $77 more than Apple's midrange iMac (but the 670 Precision workstation remains more than $1,200 more expensive than the dual-G5, 2-GB PowerMac); and Dell's 2850 dual Xeon server is about $1,700 more than the midrange on Apple's dual G5, Xserve/RAID combination.

Faster and More Capable

Although the Apple products are generally a bit faster and more multimedia capable than their PC counterparts, the most important differences aren't in things like memory and processor speed, but in design, software and licensing.

The iMac is the first genuinely ultrathin desktop, the laptop a second-generation Titanium and the server combination highly optimized for rendering, multimedia and Web serving. All combine BSD Unix with the Mac OS X supershell, and not only do Apple's licensing policies on the server not restrict you to 25 clients, but the use of BSD Unix means that you don't have to buy separate machines for each major application or suite.

In other words, if security concerns are your most important driver for desktop change, and Microsoft Office compatibility is your most significant barrier, then switching to Macs actually offers you the best of all possible worlds. Microsoft Office on Unix/Risc with a better GUI, longer product life, some cash savings and a performance bonus thrown in.

"Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles

Video Killed The Radio Star
The Buggles

I heard you on the wireless back in Fifty Two
Lying awake intent at tuning in on you.
If I was young it didn't stop you coming through.
Oh-a oh

They took the credit for your second symphony.
Rewritten by machine and new technology,
and now I understand the problems you can see.

Oh-a oh
I met your children
Oh-a oh
What did you tell them?

Video killed the radio star.
Video killed the radio star.
Pictures came and broke your heart.

Oh-a-a-a oh

And now we meet in an abandoned studio.
We hear the playback and it seems so long ago.
And you remember the jingles used to go.

Oh-a oh
You were the first one.
Oh-a oh
You were the last one.

Video killed the radio star.
Video killed the radio star.
In my mind and in my car, we can't rewind we've gone to far
Oh-a-aho oh,
Oh-a-aho oh

Video killed the radio star.
Video killed the radio star.

In my mind and in my car, we can't rewind we've gone to far.
Pictures came and broke your heart, put the blame on VTR.

You are a radio star.
You are a radio star.
Video killed the radio star.
Video killed the radio star.
Video killed the radio star.

"I'm With You" by Avril Lavigne

"I'm With You"
Avril Lavigne

I'm standing on a bridge
I'm waiting in the dark
I thought that you'd be here by now
There's nothing but the rain
No footsteps on the ground
I'm listening but there's no sound

Isn't anyone tryin to find me?
Won't somebody come take me home
It's a damp cold night
Trying to figure out this life
Wont you take me by the hand
Take me somewhere new
I don't know who you are
But I... I'm with you
I'm with you

I'm looking for a place
I'm searching for a face
Is anybody here I know
'Cause nothing's going right
And everythings a mess
And no one likes to be alone

Isn't anyone trying to find me?
Won't somebody come take me home
It's a damp cold night
Trying to figure out this life
Wont you take me by the hand
take me somewhere new
I don't know who you are
But I... I'm with you
I'm with you

Oh why is everything so confusing
Maybe I'm just out of my mind
Yea yea yea

It's a damp cold night
Trying to figure out this life
Won't you take me by the hand
take me somewhere new
I don't know who you are
But I... I'm with you
I'm with you

Take me by the hand
Take me somewhere new
I don't know who you are
But I... I'm with you
I'm with you

Take me by the hand
Take me somewhere new
I don't know who you are
But I... I'm with you
I'm with you
I'm with you...

Song: "I'll Be" by Edwin McCain

I'll Be Lyrics
Sung by Edwin McCain

The strands in your eyes that color them wonderful
Stop me and steal my breath
And emeralds from mountains thrust towards the sky
Never revealing their depth

And Tell me that we belong together
Dress it up with the trappings of love
I'll be captivated, I'll hang from your lips
Instead of the gallows of heartache that hang from above

And I'll be your cryin' shoulder
I'll be love's suicide
And I'll be better when I'm older
I'll be the greatest fan of your life

And rain falls angry on the tin roof
As we lie awake in my bed
And you're my survival, you're my living proof
My love is alive and not dead

And tell me that we belong together
Dress it up with the trappings of love
I'll be captivated, I'll hang from your lips
Instead of the gallows of heartache that hang from above

And I'll be your cryin' shoulder
I'll be love's suicide
And I'll be better when I'm older
I'll be the greatest fan of your life

And I dropped out, I burned up, I fought my way back from the dead
I tuned in, I turned on, remembered the thing that you said

And I'll be your cryin' shoulder
I'll be love's suicide
And I'll be better when I'm older
I'll be the greatest fan of your

I'll be your cryin' shoulder

Another day... another day with migraine.

Another day with a migraine. And to think that I have several items still on my plate.

I was supposed to have the three Linux servers on RAID 1. However, the easiest way to do this would be to install the RAID hardware first, and then install the OS. That is not the case here. Thought there was foresight in buying the necessary RAID controller cards. We were able to do the first one successfully. The data was backed up, the RAID controllers were installed and the OS was reinstalled. After several hours of updating files from the internet, the development software was loaded and then the back up data restored.

Now that we've done that to a (relatively) empty server, we now have to take care of two other servers, which are being used by the developers.

Again, we tried to schedule this for this evening, but I doubt I can do that with this migraine. We've deferred to next week.

This should be fun. One of the guys here has an idea. We plug in the RAID controller, connect the hard disks, power the system, duplicate (mirror) the disks and insert the Linux installation disks. But instead of installing, we repair the partitions. Since there was no partition before, and now we have a partition, this should solve the problem. After rebooting the server, the RAID should have been detected properly and the server is up without knowing it has been mirrored. In theory this should work.

If the above does not work, we do have the back-up and we just do a fresh install. Nothing to it. After the re-install, the software updates, then we install all the other software, and we restore the backups. No real difference, actually.

Hope that works.

And A Haircut (or the lack of it)

Last summer, I did not go for a haircut. I let my hair grow long. After two months, I didn't feel as if it was long enough. I've finally decided that I'm also not going to have my hair cut this summer. At the very least, I will decide on a haircut when it comes time. (Trust me, I have no idea what that last statement meant. But is sounded cool.)

Several years back, I had my hair cut when the hair at the back of my head got a little curly. Not long enough for a ponytail, just almost touching the collar of the shirt. When summer ended last year, I didn't think my hair even reached the collar of my shirt. This year we will see.

I'm giving it two months, three if I like it.

A Prize...

I saw this on my friend's LJ:

"It's not easy being a loser. Even if there's a consolation prizse, there's still the jackpot to be envied. I don't want to live on left-overs & simply content myself in them, since I believe that I deserve the best, the whole banquet, just like everybody else."

And I agree totally with that statement. Totally, one hundred percent and change. Which is why I choose friends who I can argue with and still hug and kiss afterwards.

Although it may look like I have settled for the consolation prize. I treat myself as a winner. I have a wife who understands me, and who I understand also. I have a son and daughter. And they're beginning to go weird. They're in the early teens so that makes sense. I see my daughter at two o'clock in the morning still reading a novel, and I am happy because she is reading. But I still tell her to go to sleep. I get home and I see my son outside the gates of our house with his friends. He's okay. I know where he is and where his "barkada" is.

There was a friend of mine who was in love with a girl. The girl, however, treated him like a spare tire. The reason being that she had a boyfriend she could not leave. The boyfriend was rich, and therefore considered a "catch." He was a prize. Looking at it, not that I was biased towards my friend, but the boyfriend did not have a job, he was just rich and, besides, didn't want to settle down. My friend had a good job. He had a career and he wanted to settle down. So my friend was treated as a consolation prize at most, and not really worth it, at least. Now he's getting married soon, with a beautiful girl, who also happens to be a friend who I've known for a longer time.

I can strive for the ideal. But I am happy with what I have. And with what I am. And to some, I would like to believe, I am a prize. I am a prized and treasured friend. Because I prize and treasure my friends.

A Thought...

There are several things which scare people. Normally, number one on the list would be speaking in public. Another would be talking about sex.

Let's finish talking about sex first. Sex.

Now that that's finished, I found out early on that when it comes to speaking in public or in front of a crowd, nothing beats just getting it over with. I would rather go first. There, I'm done. Who's next?

Moving forward, I think that a lot of people are afraid of speaking in front of a crowd is because of several possible things, including: it's an unknown, it's uncontrollable, and usually, it doesn't make any sense. Again, early on, something like twenty years ago, I learned to welcome the unknown, the uncontrollable, and those that don't make sense.

The unknown will always be unknown, until you get to know it. What did that mean?! So, damn it, get to know the thing and have it over and done with, is what I always say. No amount of research can replace really doing it and moving to the unknown. As long as you fear the unknown, you will always feel like a blindfolded guy with a precipice somewhere nearby. And you need to walk from here to there. For me the fun part of that scenario is running blindfolded. You may not know where you're headed but you're making good time. That scenario only makes sense if you think in terms of economics and economic theory: an economist is a guy looking out the rear window, navigating a car with a blindfolded driver.

A roller-coaster is, for the passenger, uncontrollable. You paid for an ride which you cannot control. Some people consider that fun. Gravity is basically uncontrollable. Some people jump from airplanes to enjoy the feeling of gravity. Life is uncontrollable. Not totally, but for the most part it is. There are too many dependencies on living life, based on the sun, the weather, the people, the traffic, the elevator, the noise, the computer, etc. There are many things which are uncontrollable. I would rather enjoy the ride. I might fret about it every so often, but I had decided ages ago, that I will enjoy the ride. There was a trip I had with my boss, and we were going to Iloilo. Suddenly, the plane encountered turbulence. Really gut-wrenching turbulence. The passengers were worried and they showed an uncontrollable reaction of expressing their feelings by the look on their faces. Me? I was trying to sleep. I opened my eyes. Closed them again, and tried to continue my nap. If that plane was going to crash, there was nothing I could have done to stop it. Best I could have done? Give a prayer of thanks. For everything including the plane ride. What, me, worry about things uncontrollable? I don't think so. I have accepted that there are a lot of things uncontrollable. Best that you can do is enjoy the ride.

I have found that life is both an unknown and uncontrollable. As such, it does not necessarily make sense. Okay, okay, let's be more specific and to the point: Life does not make sense. If you travel around Metro Manila, you'll notice that there are lots of litter everywhere. And then you get to Marikina, and you get to ask yourself, where is the litter? You go north on the expressway, and just as you get past the Candaba viaduct, you want to drive (or fly) at 120KPH. You just can't because there are short bridges every kilometer or so., with ugly approaches which look like Evel Knievel motorcycle ramps. Feels like it, too. Faster than 80 KPH, your vehicle will fly. It doesn't make sense to have a highway with jumping ramps. The University of Santo Tomas is the largest "Catholic University" in the world (in terms of enrollment, I guess). It was a World War II interment camp where caucasians were treated as imprisoned by the Japanese. This was where the term "public display of affection" or PDA was first used (with signs announcing "No Public Display of Affection"). The sexes were segregated. And yet, there was at least one baby (I don't know where the records might be kept, but I read somewhere that there were two babies) conceived and born in the camp. Again, it does not make sense. You enter a tower (any tower) and climb upstairs to the top (or halfway for best effect) and you will hear moans. Someone is moaning! And no, that's not you groaning, it's someone else moaning. No kidding! In every tower, you will hear acoustically tuned moans. Ghosts maybe? Who knows?
Really, it does not make any sense. Cats and dogs, for instance. You pet a dog because he treats you like you deserve it. You pet the cat because he treats you like you owe it to him. I have found that asking "Why?" makes a lot less sense than asking "Why not?"

So there. Maybe that's the secret of my "weirdness." Whereas other people are afraid of the unknown, the uncontrollable, and those that don't make sense, I have learned to live with them and, in some instances, to embrace them. I'm happy.

Besides, friendship and love are both unknown, uncontrollable and don't make any sense. "Illogical" is what a famous half-human half-Vulcan, would say. And then he'd say "fascinating."

A Talk...

I had a nice talk with a good friend yesterday. No, I don't think "good friend" describes her; a "great friend" would not be enough to describe her. Too bad, I asked her not to send me text messages if she just wants to annoy me. She found out I wasn't getting annoyed. In fact, I was enjoying myself. I welcomed the distraction. Although I didn't say that I can't send her any text messages (whether to annoy her or not, doesn't matter, does it?) I don't think it's fair for me to be telling her to stop and not stopping in return.

I'm not sure when I'll see her again, though. A fun friend to be with. Au revoir, ma cherie! [Thanks for the correction and grammar lesson.]

PS: I did say that if there's a need for a rant, just send a message, and I will listen. I always had, and I always will.
